Background of the Study

Nurses play a crucial role in providing care to elderly individuals, especially in managing chronic diseases, promoting healthy aging, and ensuring that elderly patients receive timely interventions. However, the quality of geriatric care is directly influenced by the level of training and specialization nurses receive in geriatrics. In Bauchi State, as in many parts of Nigeria, the training of nurses in geriatric care is often inadequate, which can affect the care provided to elderly patients. Nurses without specialized training may lack the skills and knowledge necessary to manage the complex medical, emotional, and social needs of elderly individuals (Mohammed et al., 2023). This study aims to assess the training of geriatric nurses in Bauchi State and evaluate its effectiveness in improving care for elderly patients.

Statement of the Problem

Although nurses in Bauchi State are involved in the care of elderly patients, their training in geriatric care is often insufficient, and the lack of specialized education can lead to substandard care. This may result in mismanagement of chronic conditions, inadequate pain control, and failure to address the psychosocial needs of elderly individuals. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of geriatric nursing training in Bauchi State and its impact on the care provided to elderly patients.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the training of geriatric nurses in Bauchi State.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of geriatric nursing training in improving care for elderly patients.

  3. To identify gaps in geriatric nursing education and recommend strategies to improve training and care quality.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of training of geriatric nurses in Bauchi State?

  2. How effective is the geriatric nursing training in improving care for elderly patients in Bauchi State?

  3. What gaps exist in the training of geriatric nurses, and how can they be addressed to improve elderly care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Geriatric nursing training in Bauchi State is insufficient and does not adequately prepare nurses to care for elderly patients.

  2. The training of geriatric nurses in Bauchi State has a positive impact on the quality of care provided to elderly patients.

  3. Addressing gaps in geriatric nursing education will improve the care of elderly patients in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on geriatric nurses working in both public and private healthcare settings in Bauchi State. Limitations may include difficulty in accessing all relevant data and the potential lack of standardized training programs for comparison.

Definitions of Terms

  • Geriatric Nurses: Nurses who specialize in providing healthcare to elderly individuals, focusing on their unique medical, psychological, and social needs.

  • Training Effectiveness: The extent to which training programs enhance the skills and knowledge necessary for improving patient care.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 and older, who experience specific health challenges related to aging.
